Tourism in Portugal in 2024: Sustained Growth and New Records

News

In 2024, the tourism sector in Portugal achieved new records, consolidating itself as one of the fundamental pillars of the national economy. According to preliminary data released by the National Statistics Institute (INE), the country’s tourist establishments received approximately 31.6 million guests, resulting in 80.3 million overnight stays, representing increases of 5.2% and 4%, respectively, compared to 2023.

This growth, although significant, indicates a slowdown in the rate of increase compared to previous years. In 2023, the increase in overnight stays was 10%, while in 2024 it stood at 4%. This slowdown can be attributed to several factors, including the maturation of the Portuguese tourism market and global economic challenges.

Revenues from tourism also reached historic levels, exceeding €27 billion. This amount reinforces the importance of tourism as an economic driver, representing a significant portion of the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

The geographical distribution of tourism growth revealed interesting trends. The Central region stood out by exceeding the 8 million overnight stays mark for the first time, registering an increase of 5.5% over the previous year, higher than the national average. This performance highlights the growing attractiveness of areas beyond traditional tourist destinations.

Lisbon continues to attract the highest number of overnight stays. “The municipality of Lisbon accounted for 19.6% of total overnight stays, reaching 15.7 million (+3.6%). Overnight stays by residents decreased by 0.8% and those by non-residents increased by 4.4%. This municipality accounted for 23.9% of total overnight stays by non-residents in 2024 (24.0% in 2023),” according to INE.

Local accommodation establishments recorded increases of 4% in total revenue and 4.4% in room revenue. In rural and residential tourism, the increases were 9.5% and 6.3%, respectively.

By 2025, the government forecasts 9% growth in the tourism sector, supported by strategies to diversify supply and improve infrastructure. Among the initiatives highlighted are the potential privatisation of TAP, the expansion of airport capacity and the development of high-speed rail links, factors considered crucial to sustaining the continued growth of tourism in Portugal.
