Portugal sees strong growth in the tourist accommodation sector in April

In April 2025, the tourist accommodation sector in Portugal once again recorded very positive results. According to data released by INE, there were 2.9 million guests (+8.5%) and 7.1 million overnight stays (+9.2%) compared to the same month in 2024. Total revenue amounted to €571.1 million (+12.6%) and room revenue reached €436.0 million (+13.9%).

This robust performance was influenced, in part, by the change in the Easter calendar, which in 2025 fell in April (in 2024, it was in March), concentrating tourist flows in a more favourable period in terms of demand.

From January to April 2025, the results remain positive:

  • 8.5 million guests (+4.4%)

  • 20.5 million overnight stays (+2.7%)

  • Total revenue of €1.5 billion (+7.5%)

  • 1.1 billion euros in accommodation revenue (+7.7%)

Tourism continues to drive service exports

The Bank of Portugal’s preliminary indicator for the Travel and Tourism item in the balance of payments points to a 7.6% growth in tourism exports in April, reaching 2,227.69 million euros. Tourism imports also grew by 9.0%, reaching 633.61 million euros.

In the first four months of 2025, tourism revenues exceeded €7.2 billion (+5.1%), while tourism expenditure exceeded €1.66 billion (+5.3%).

Portugal remains one of the most popular destinations in Europe

According to the European Travel Commission (ETC) report Monitoring Sentiment for Domestic and Intra-European Travel, Portugal remains in the TOP 10 of European tourists’ preferences for the next 6 months. The survey, which assessed 10 source markets, indicates that 72% of Europeans intend to travel by the end of the summer.

Among those who intend to visit Portugal:

  • 30.4% have been to the country before, indicating a high rate of loyalty.

The most valued criteria when choosing a destination are:

    • Safety (a priority for more than half of respondents)

    • Good weather conditions (39.1%)

    • Attractive promotions and offers (34.8%)
